The beloved ‘Mission: Impossible’ film franchise has been thriving since 1996, when Tom Cruise debuted as secret agent Ethan Hunt. Through the years, audiences have seen him rescue the world repeatedly — frequently undertaking perilous stunts personally. Following the setting of multiple box office records, Tom Cruise’s role in ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ garnered him a Guinness World Record.

He established the record for the highest number of flaming parachute jumps by a person after leaping from a helicopter 16 times with a fuel-soaked parachute ignited in a stunt for the last installment of the action series.

“Tom doesn’t just play action heroes – he is an action hero!” said Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records editor-in-chief in a statement. “A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”

Cruise and the stunt crew dedicated weeks to prepare for the action in Drakensberg, South Africa, prior to climbing over 75,000 feet in the helicopter. The actor subsequently leaped with the burning parachute, freeing himself and activating a reserve parachute. In many of the shots, Cruise was equipped with a 50-lb. A Snorri camera rig secured to his body for a closer view of the fiery stunt, according to the outlet.

A behind-the-scenes featurette of the scene showcased all 16 takes after the actor performed the stunt with the team. “We’re going to be very clever.” I’m not suggesting you take risks. “We avoid risks… clearly,” Cruise stated, as reported by Deadline. At the same time, ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is helmed by Christopher McQuarrie from a script he co-penned with Erik Jendresen. Tom Cruise reprises his iconic role as Ethan Hunt while “The Final Reckoning” hints at a thrilling conclusion to the “Mission: Impossible” franchise after eight films.
