Top AIIMS Surgeon Suspended After Nurse’s Harassment Complaint Reaches PM’s Office

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has suspended senior surgeon Dr. Anil Kumar Pandey from the Department of Surgery following a nurse’s complaint of workplace harassment. The action was reportedly taken after the grievance reached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), prompting an urgent review by the hospital administration.

According to sources cited by NDTV, the nurse accused Dr. Pandey of repeated verbal harassment and professional misconduct, alleging that her complaints to internal authorities had not been adequately addressed earlier. The matter was subsequently escalated to the PMO, which sought a detailed report from AIIMS management.

In response, the institute constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the allegations. Pending the outcome of the probe, Dr. Pandey has been suspended from all official duties. AIIMS officials confirmed that the decision was made to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, free from any administrative influence.

A spokesperson for AIIMS emphasized that the institution maintains a “zero-tolerance policy” towards any form of workplace harassment or misconduct. “We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all staff members. The matter is being handled with utmost seriousness,” the statement said.

The inquiry committee, comprising senior doctors and administrative officers, is expected to submit its findings within two weeks. Based on the report, further disciplinary or legal action may follow.

This incident has reignited conversations about workplace safety and accountability in medical institutions. Health professionals and unions have urged AIIMS to implement stronger grievance redressal mechanisms to protect employees, especially nursing staff, from harassment.
