As the Kashmir Valley enjoys a break from the relentless heat wave, the region is experiencing a surge in tourism. Hotels and houseboats are fully booked as visitors flock to the picturesque valley. The iconic houseboats on Dal Lake, a must-visit for any tourist, are in such high demand that they need to be reserved months in advance.
One tourist, Prarik Aggarwal, mentioned, “We booked our stay in the houseboat weeks ago to avoid any hassle. We also ensured our Shikara rides were arranged. Given the peak tourist season, it’s crucial to book early to avoid any issues.”
While much of India grapples with a heat wave, the Kashmir Valley has seen cooler weather, bringing joy to tourists. This seasonal respite has led to a significant increase in visitors, with most hotels, houseboats, and huts at popular tourist spots fully booked. The valley saw over a million tourists in the first four months of 2024 alone, with winter tourism breaking previous records. Data from Srinagar International Airport shows an average of over 18,000 passengers daily, most of whom are tourists. The number of flights has also increased from an average of 70 in February to 94 currently.
Another tourist, Vandana, shared her experience, “We have had no issues finding Shikaras despite the rush. The temperature difference between Gujarat and Kashmir is about 15 degrees, and we are loving it here. Pre-booking the houseboat was a wise decision.”
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir, along with tourism stakeholders, is optimistic that this year will break all previous records for tourist arrivals. The influx of visitors is a testament to Kashmir’s enduring appeal as a travel destination. The scenic beauty, coupled with the pleasant weather, makes it a perfect getaway from the scorching heat in other parts of India.
This surge in tourism is a significant boost for the local economy, providing much-needed business for hotels, houseboats, and other tourist services. The breathtaking landscapes, combined with the valley’s unique cultural heritage, offer an unforgettable experience for visitors. From the serene Dal Lake to the majestic mountains, Kashmir continues to captivate the hearts of tourists from around the world.
