In the wake of Cyclone Remal, which devastated Mizoram, a tragic incident occurred at the Melthum and Hlimen border in Aizawl. On the morning of May 28, around 6 am, a stone quarry collapsed, leading to the deaths of seven individuals. Despite the sorrow, there was a moment of hope as a child was rescued from the debris and promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, many other workers, believed to be non-tribals, remain trapped, and rescue operations are ongoing. Among the deceased, three are reported to be non-Mizos, further highlighting the diverse impact of the disaster. The quarry collapse also destroyed several nearby houses, worsening the tragedy’s overall impact.

Cyclone Remal’s fury extended beyond the quarry collapse, triggering a massive landslide that blocked the Lengpui Airport, severely disrupting transportation in the region. Over 20 community cemeteries also collapsed, compounding the challenges faced by local communities as they struggled to cope with the cyclone’s aftermath. The cyclone’s impact on infrastructure was significant, but it also had devastating effects on the local environment and livelihoods.

Reports indicate that the Tlawng River swelled and flooded homes in the Sairang locality, displacing many residents. The rapid water flow also resulted in the loss of livestock, with pigs swept away in the Tlangnuam locality. These events highlight the cyclone’s extensive impact on both human and animal life, creating a ripple effect of challenges for the affected communities.

Cyclone Remal made landfall along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on the night of May 26, bringing heavy rains and powerful winds. As it moved towards the northeastern parts of India, it left a trail of destruction in its wake. The cyclone’s path of devastation underscores the vulnerability of these regions to such natural disasters and the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures.

In the face of such tragedies, it is crucial to focus on resilience and recovery. The ongoing rescue efforts and the response from local authorities and communities demonstrate the strength and solidarity of the people of Mizoram. As they work to rebuild their lives and communities, it is essential to provide them with the necessary support and resources. This includes not only immediate relief efforts but also long-term measures to enhance infrastructure, improve disaster response capabilities, and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
