The world will learn “over the next, probably, 10 days” whether the United States will negotiate with Iran or launch a war campaign, according to US President Donald Trump.  on talks with the Islamic Republic on its nuclear program, Trump stated during the inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace in Washington, DC: “We have to make a meaningful deal otherwise bad things happen.”

The United States has recently increased its military presence in the Middle East, while negotiations between American and Iranian diplomats in Switzerland have shown some progress.  If US bases in the area are used in any military attack against Iran, the Iranian government has informed the UN Secretary-General that it will consider them to be legitimate targets.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Tehran’s UN envoy stated that although Trump’s rhetoric indicated a genuine threat of an attack, Iran did not seek a conflict.  Some Republicans and Democratic lawmakers have opposed any possible military action in Iran without first receiving consent from Congress.

Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, had “some very good meetings” with Iran, Trump said in his speech.Trump is still hopeful for a diplomatic solution to Tehran’s nuclear program, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said a day earlier, warning that Iran would be “very wise” to strike a deal with the US.

The Board of Peace was initially believed to be intended to supervise reconstruction and assist in bringing an end to the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza when Trump originally announced it.  However, during the last month, its purpose has seemed to transcend a single dispute, leading many to question whether the Trump-chaired board, which consists of around two dozen nations, is intended to marginalize the UN.

According to reports, the White House was considering additional strike options this week after US missiles and aircraft hit three Iranian nuclear installations in June of last year.
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is one of the American forces that have been increasing their presence in the area in recent weeks In previous military operations in the Middle East, the US used RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, and the UK overseas territory of Diego Garcia, in the Indian Ocean.

Satellite images have also shown that Iran has reinforced military facilities, and the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, has posted messages to social media threatening US forces. “The US President constantly says that the US has sent a warship toward Iran. Of course, a warship is a dangerous piece of military hardware,” one of Khamenei’s posts read.

“However, more dangerous than that warship is the weapon that can send that warship to the bottom of the sea.” Any military action against Iran has been opposed by a number of US Congress members.  Citing the 1973 War Powers Act, Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Democrat Ro Khanna of California have stated that they will attempt to compel a vote on the issue next week.

The legislation gives Congress the authority to restrain the president’s authority to send the United States into war.A similar war powers resolution that would have required the Trump administration to get congressional approval before beginning additional military operations in Venezuela after Nicolas Maduro was captured was blocked by Senate Republicans in January
