British police detained numerous supporters on Saturday of a pro-Palestinian demonstration group that was prohibited this month under anti-terrorism laws.

Authorities reported that they arrested a minimum of 41 individuals in London and 16 more in Manchester for expressing support for the organization Palestine Action. The campaign organization Defend our Juries reported that 86 individuals were detained throughout the UK, with additional demonstrations occurring in Wales and Northern Ireland.

This month, British lawmakers banned the group under anti-terrorism laws following incidents where members trespassed on a Royal Air Force base and vandalized aircraft to protest Britain’s backing of Israel. Following a related demonstration in London last week, authorities detained 29 individuals.

Prior to the arrests in London on Saturday, nearly 50 demonstrators assembled with signs that read “I stand against genocide.” I endorse Palestine Action” by a statue of the late South African President Nelson Mandela located outside the British parliament.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague is considering a case filed by South Africa that charges Israel with genocide against Palestinians during the Gaza conflict, which started after the Palestinian militant group Hamas assaulted Israel in October 2023. Israel has consistently rejected allegations of wrongdoing.

The British government’s choice to label Palestine Action a terrorist organization places it alongside Hamas, al-Qaeda, and ISIS. Membership now comes with a prison term of up to 14 years.

Those against the ban argue that employing anti-terrorism laws is unsuitable for a group primarily accused of property damage rather than causing harm to individuals, despite some members having faced charges for violence during confrontations with law enforcement.

Palestine Action primarily focused on Israeli and Israel-associated companies in the UK like defense firm Elbit Systems (ESLT.TA), frequently using red paint, obstructing entrances, or vandalizing equipment.
