The United Nations on Saturday (Sept 7) called for a full investigation into the killing of a 26-year-old Turkish-American woman during a protest at the West Bank. The Israeli military has been accused by Palestinian and Turkish officials of killing the woman, identified as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi.

The military said its troops had fired toward a male “main instigator” who posed a threat by hurling rocks at soldiers.

According to a Reuters report that cited Palestinian and Turkish officials, Eygi participated in a demonstration on Friday against the growth of settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. According to the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement (ISM), Eygi participated in a weekly protest against Israeli settlements in Beita on Friday.
She was characterized by Palestinian officials as a Seattle-based activist who was dual-citizenship US and Turkey.

The president of the University of Washington in Seattle, Ana Mari Cauce, released a statement describing Eygi’s recent graduation as “awful” and mentioning that she had a “positive influence” on other students.

The incident happened during a routine protest march by activists in Beita, a community close to Nablus where Jewish settlers have frequently attacked Palestinians.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reports that Eygi was shot once in the head. The ministry blamed her death on the actions of the Israeli government. The White House expressed its profound grief about Eygi’s passing and urged Israel to look into the matter.

The 26-year-old lady arrived at Rafidia Hospital in Nablus in critical condition with a significant head injury, according to Fouad Nafaa, the hospital’s director.
