UN Warns of ‘Catastrophic’ Fallout if Israel Expands Military Operations in Gaza

A top United Nations official has warned that Israel’s reported plans to expand military operations across the entire Gaza Strip could lead to “catastrophic consequences” for civilians and hostages still held in the territory.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča expressed deep concern over recent reports suggesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a full-scale military reoccupation of Gaza. Jenča stated such a move would severely endanger civilian lives, jeopardize the safety of Israeli hostages, and further escalate the humanitarian crisis in the region.

While Netanyahu reportedly held discussions with his security team to expand the military offensive, internal divisions have surfaced. Israeli military leaders, including Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, have reportedly expressed reservations, fearing the plan could worsen the already dire situation on the ground and isolate Israel diplomatically.

The Security Council meeting also featured an emotional appeal from the relative of an Israeli hostage, Evyatar David, who appeared gaunt and distressed in a recent video released by Hamas. The relative urged urgent international action, stressing that time is running out for those still in captivity.

China’s Deputy UN Ambassador Geng Shuang joined the chorus of concern, calling on Israel to immediately halt any planned expansion and pressed for a ceasefire. He warned that renewed escalation would not only deepen suffering in Gaza but also derail any chances of a peaceful resolution.

Since the conflict reignited in October 2023, Gaza has faced severe humanitarian collapse, with more than 60,000 casualties, most of them civilians. Health infrastructure is on the brink of collapse, famine is spreading, and aid access remains heavily restricted.

With tensions escalating, the global community is urging restraint as the region teeters on the edge of a deeper crisis.
