Uncertainty Surrounding Asian Games Participation Casts Shadow on Indian Gymnasts

The Gymnastic Federation of India (GFI) president, Sudhir Mital, has expressed concerns over the ambiguity surrounding the participation of Indian gymnasts in the upcoming Asian Games. Mital highlighted that the prevailing uncertainty is not only causing confusion but is also taking a toll on the athletes’ psychological well-being.

The GFI had previously communicated with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Ministry regarding the selection of nine gymnasts, which includes prominent names like Dipa Karmakar, Rakesh Patra, and Yogeshwar Singh, for the Asian Games. The selection was carried out according to the criteria specified by the Ministry.

However, the situation took a twist during a meeting on July 19, where “SAI officials informed that only 2 gymnasts are eligible as per the selection criteria.” This led to a state of perplexity, prompting the GFI to correspond with the Sports Ministry and SAI. Unfortunately, the federation is yet to receive any response, further exacerbating the uncertainty surrounding the gymnasts’ participation.

The prevailing ambiguity not only affects the logistical aspects of the athletes’ preparation but also takes a toll on their mental well-being. Competing at such a prestigious event requires immense focus and mental preparation, which becomes challenging in the face of uncertainty.

The GFI’s president emphasized the need for prompt resolution and clarity to ensure the athletes can channel their efforts towards training and preparation with a focused mindset. The Asian Games represent a significant platform for Indian gymnasts to showcase their talent and dedication on an international stage. Timely communication and transparent selection processes are crucial to fostering a conducive environment for the athletes to perform at their best.
