A remote town is grieving a “unimaginable tragedy” when a three-year-old kid was discovered dead in a mobile fire. At around 5.50 p.m. on Thursday, emergency services were dispatched to Lake View Street in Boort, north-central Victoria, following reports of a caravan on fire. After firemen doused the fire, the child’s body was discovered inside the trailer. Victoria police stated on Friday that the toddler was from the Greater Bendigo region, around an hour’s drive south of Boort. Arson and explosives squad investigators were dispatched to the area while the police investigation progressed.
“At this stage we don’t have any updates regarding the fire as the investigation remains ongoing,” a police spokesperson said. “Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place.”
Donna Doyle, CEO of Boort District Health, encouraged members of the community to seek help at the hospital, which has mental health resources available. “It is an unimaginable tragedy and the family are totally devastated and wrapping each other up in love and support at this time,” she told local media on Friday. “But ask that you respect their privacy while they process everything that’s happened in the last 24 hours.”
The police requested anyone with knowledge to come forward. Boort is a little town with a population of around 900 people, but it becomes a popular tourist destination during the summer months. Police were also looking into the death of a kid in the state’s east. On Friday at around 11.20 a.m., the kid was observed in a river at Cobbannah, at a camp site off the Angusvale Track. He was discovered dead at 2.50pm.
