The Union Budget 2026-27 has announced major allocations aimed at accelerating development in India’s Northeast. A key highlight is the proposed Buddhist tourism circuit connecting six northeastern states, intended to promote spiritual tourism, improve connectivity, and generate local employment. The initiative is expected to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage while boosting the hospitality and services sectors.

Meghalaya emerged as a major beneficiary, receiving a record ₹9,631 crore in tax devolution, the highest ever for the state. The enhanced allocation is expected to strengthen infrastructure, social welfare programmes, and overall economic growth. The budget underscores the Centre’s focus on inclusive development and sustained investment in the Northeast.
