The central government, driven by a commitment to mitigate loss of life and property in various calamities, channels financial support to states through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to fortify their disaster management capabilities. In a significant move, the Union Home Ministry has allocated a substantial sum of Rs 5,000 crore for the augmentation, expansion, and modernization of state fire services. Among these funds, a dedicated amount of Rs 500 crore has been earmarked to encourage states to enact legal provisions and undertake infrastructural improvements to bolster their disaster preparedness.

Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, these initiatives aim to fortify the Disaster Risk Reduction System, striving for zero casualties and minimal property damage during emergencies. The strategy necessitates active participation from the states, with each state contributing 25% of the total project expenditure. Special provisions have been made for the North Eastern and Himalayan states, which will contribute only 10% of the cost due to their unique circumstances.
