US Congressional Delegation Meets Dalai Lama, Angers China

News Mania Desk/ Agnibeena Ghosh/20th June 2024

A bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers recently visited the Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala, India, sparking strong objections from China, which views the spiritual leader as a separatist threat.

Led by Republican representative Michael McCaul and including Democratic former house speaker Nancy Pelosi, the delegation’s visit underscored US support for Tibet amid strained relations between Washington and Beijing. These tensions escalated during the Trump administration with tariffs on Chinese goods and were exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and military tensions in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.

The Dalai Lama has resided in Dharamshala since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after an unsuccessful uprising against Chinese rule. The delegation also met with officials from the Tibetan government-in-exile, advocating for greater autonomy for Tibet, a move vehemently opposed by Beijing, which refuses to recognize the exiled administration.

Following their meeting with the Dalai Lama, the US lawmakers addressed a gathering at a nearby monastery, emphasizing the Resolve Tibet Act recently passed by the US Congress. This legislation aims to facilitate dialogue between the Dalai Lama and Chinese officials to peacefully resolve Tibet’s status.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi highlighted the bill’s significance, stating it sends a clear message to China about the US stance on Tibetan freedom. Meanwhile, Republican representative Michael McCaul emphasized American support for Tibet’s right to self-determination despite warnings from the Chinese Communist Party.

China swiftly condemned the visit and the newly passed legislation, urging the US not to interfere in Tibetan affairs and warning against signing the bill into law. Beijing asserts that the Dalai Lama engages in separatist activities under the guise of religion, urging the US to refrain from any contact with him.

In response, the Dalai Lama denies being a separatist and advocates for substantial autonomy and cultural protection for Tibetans under Chinese rule. Despite China’s objections, the spiritual leader has historically engaged with US officials, including several American presidents, though he has not met with President Joe Biden since his inauguration in 2021.

Looking ahead, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to travel to the US for medical treatment, raising speculation about potential diplomatic engagements during his visit. Meanwhile, India, while recognizing Tibet as part of China, hosts a significant Tibetan exile community, underscoring its delicate diplomatic balancing act between Beijing and Dharamshala.

The visit of the US congressional delegation to Dharamshala underscores ongoing international scrutiny of Tibet’s status and highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics between the US, China, and India concerning Tibetan autonomy and human rights.
