US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods have been revoked by a vote of the US House of Representatives.
Six Republican legislators joined Democrats in supporting a resolution that aims to lift the tariffs that Trump placed on Canada last year, voting 219 to 211. Since it still needs to be approved by the US Senate and then by Trump, who is unlikely to sign it into law, the vote is primarily symbolic.
Donald Trump has slapped a number of tariffs on Canada since he was re-elected, most recently threatening to impose a 100% import tax in reaction to Canada’s proposed trade agreement with China.
Trump wrote on Truth Social during the House floor vote: “Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time.” The vote followed an unsuccessful attempt by US House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump friend in Congress, to prevent members from discussing Trump’s tariffs on the chamber floor.
Six Republican defections and a nearly united front from Democrats were sufficient to win the votes because Republicans held a slim majority in the US House.Gregory Meeks, a Democrat, had introduced the bill, claiming that Trump had “weaponized tariffs” against friends and caused economic instability worldwide.
Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska was one of the six Republicans who crossed the aisle to join Democrats in approving the measure. Before the vote, he said “tariffs have been a ‘net negative’ for the economy and are a significant tax that American consumers, manufacturers, and farmers are paying.”
