The West Bengal government on Friday suspended three senior IPS officers over their alleged mishandling of the investigation into the 2024 RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced.
Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat, Adhikari said former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and former deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta were suspended following a departmental probe initiated against them.
According to the chief minister, the officers were accused of “mishandling” the sensitive case during the initial phase of investigation. He also alleged that they attempted to offer money to the victim’s parents as a bribe and conducted an “unauthorised press conference” related to the incident.
Adhikari clarified that the state government would not interfere in the actual criminal investigation, which is currently being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation and is under judicial scrutiny.
The disciplinary proceedings and departmental inquiry will be led by the state home secretary under the supervision of the chief secretary, the CM added.
