Zayn Malik hints at facing racism during One Direction days in new song

Pop star Zayn Malik recently discussed encountering racism during his time with One Direction. Zayn shared a preview of his upcoming track along with the handwritten lyrics for the song called ‘Fuchsia Sea’.

The excerpt quickly went viral, not just for its emotional resonance, but also due to this specific line which stated, “Cause I worked hard in a white band, and they still laughed at the Asian”. However, there were no clear indications of whom the ‘they’ are referred to in the song. Many speculated that the ‘Pillowtalk’ singer is taking a dig at the band.

Reacting to the lyrics, fans made their assumptions, with one writing, “Zayn Malik deserves the biggest apology. I am so serious you people make me sick (sic)”.

Another wrote, “Cause I worked hard in a white band, and they still laughed at the Asian. Left a Blue mark on a white flag. Then used blood for the painting.” YES Zayn Malik speak up. I think these few lines have more words, more artistry than one direction’s whole discography, (sic).”

Zayn’s experience with One Direction has consistently been anything but simple. The group, which skyrocketed to worldwide recognition in the early 2010s with hits such as ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Best Song Ever’, officially parted ways in 2016.

The ensemble, including Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and the late Liam Payne, briefly came together in November last year to grieve Liam’s premature passing at the age of 31. It was the first occasion in years that the surviving members appeared publicly together.

Regarding Zayn, he declared his inaugural solo tour after the breakup in 2024. Named the ‘Stairway to the Sky’ tour, it began in October and covered 11 cities, such as Las Vegas, Washington DC, and London.

With ‘Fuschia Sea’ approaching, Zayn appears prepared to fully embrace his voice like never before.
