The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that the monsoon is likely to reach Delhi over the next 2-3 days, marking a significant advancement in the seasonal weather pattern across North India.
As of Thursday, the monsoon has further progressed into various regions including the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and Punjab. This expansion is indicative of the monsoon’s robust movement across the Indian subcontinent.
Typically, the normal date for monsoon onset in Delhi is June 27, making the imminent arrival a timely development according to IMD forecasts. The northern limit of the monsoon currently traverses through key locations such as Barmer, Jaipur, Agra, Banda, Siddhi, Chaibasa, Haldia, Pakur, Patna, Maharajganj, Dehradun, Una, Pathankot, and Jammu.
IMD’s latest update indicates favorable conditions for the southwest monsoon to further advance into additional areas within the next 2-3 days. These areas include Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh (remaining parts), Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu.
Meteorologically, a trough at mean sea level extending from Maharashtra to the north Kerala coast is influencing weather patterns. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation centered over central Gujarat, along with a trough extending from this system to West Bihar in lower tropospheric levels, is contributing to widespread light to moderate rainfall across several states.
Over the next five days, IMD forecasts predict:
- Widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over regions including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh.
- Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Moreover, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in specific regions during the mentioned period:
- Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka (June 27 to July 1).
- Saurashtra, Kutch, Kerala, Mahe, South Interior Karnataka (June 28).
- Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha, West Madhya Pradesh (June 29).
- East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh (until June 30).
The IMD’s comprehensive forecast underscores the dynamic nature of the monsoon’s progress and its impact on regional weather patterns across India. As Delhi prepares for the arrival of monsoon showers, residents and authorities are advised to stay updated with further advisories from the IMD for timely precautions and preparations.
This update from the IMD serves as a crucial guide for residents and authorities alike, ensuring readiness for the upcoming monsoon season in Delhi and adjoining regions.
