As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, India’s athletes are primed to make a significant impact, with several key contenders expected to vie for medals. Among the standout names are Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, and PV Sindhu, who have previously shone on the Olympic stage. Newcomers like Nikhat Zareen, Antim Panghal, and Sift Kaur Samra also aim to make their mark. However, the path to the podium is fraught with formidable competitors who will challenge India’s hopes for Olympic glory.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw, is a strong favorite to replicate his Tokyo success in Paris. Yet, he faces stiff competition from Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. Vadlejch, a silver medalist from Tokyo, has been exceptionally consistent, recently triumphing at the European Athletics Championships and besting Chopra at the Doha Diamond League. Nadeem, while less consistent, has the capability to pull off surprises, as evidenced by his impressive 90m throws.
In men’s hockey, the Indian team’s quest for Olympic success will likely involve navigating past Australia, a team that has historically posed significant challenges. India’s recent encounters with Australia have been tough, including a lopsided loss in the 2022 Commonwealth Games final and a heavy defeat in a recent April match. The Indian team may need to overcome Australia in both the group stage and potentially in the semifinals to secure a medal.
PV Sindhu, aiming to become the first Indian athlete to win three individual Olympic medals, will need to contend with Chen Yufei of China, the second seed and a formidable opponent. Despite Sindhu’s strong track record, including a favorable draw in the initial rounds, her path to the medal could be obstructed by Yufei, who has been in excellent form and defeated Sindhu in their latest encounter at the French Open.
In badminton doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are poised as strong medal contenders. They face their toughest challenge from the top-seeded Chinese pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang. Although Satwik and Chirag have a relatively favorable group stage, their success will heavily depend on overcoming the Chinese duo, who have a better head-to-head record against them.
Mirabai Chanu, a revered figure in weightlifting, will look to build on her Tokyo silver medal. She faces a significant challenge from Hou Zhihui of China, a dominant force in the 49kg category who holds multiple world records. Despite recent injury concerns, Chanu’s aim is to surpass Zhihui and secure another podium finish.
Antim Panghal, making her Olympic debut, is seeded fourth in wrestling and could face Japan’s Akari Fujinami, a dominant force with an unbeaten streak since 2017. Panghal’s performance in the preliminary rounds will be crucial to setting up a potential final showdown with Fujinami.
Lovlina Borgohain, already a world champion in boxing, aims for a historic second Olympic medal. She could encounter China’s Li Qian, a seasoned boxer with a strong Olympic track record. Borgohain’s previous victories over Qian in the 2023 Worlds will be a key confidence boost.
Nikhat Zareen, also making her Olympic debut, faces a tough challenge from Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu. Zareen’s preparation has included direct sparring with Cakiroglu, who remains a significant rival.
Finally, Sift Kaur Samra, an emerging star in shooting, will contend with China’s Han Jiayu and Zhang Qiongyue. Samra’s consistent performances and recent World Cup success position her well, but the competition will be intense.
As these athletes prepare for Paris, they will need to navigate these challenges and rivals to bring home medals for India.
