Today marks the 9th death anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a towering figure in Indian science and politics, whose influence continues to inspire people across the globe. Known fondly as the “People’s President,” Dr. Kalam’s legacy is celebrated today for his remarkable contributions to both space and missile technology, which significantly advanced India’s defense capabilities.
Dr. Kalam, who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007, was a trailblazer in the field of aerospace engineering. His groundbreaking work in developing the Agni and Prithvi missiles was instrumental in enhancing India’s strategic defense. These achievements are a testament to his dedication and visionary leadership, making him a revered figure in Indian history.
Born on October 15, 1931, in a humble family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalam’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming one of India’s most respected leaders is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite facing numerous challenges during his childhood, he remained resolute in his pursuit of knowledge. After completing his schooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School, he pursued a degree in physics from St. Joseph’s College. His passion for learning, particularly in mathematics, drove him to further his education in aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology.
Dr. Kalam began his career at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958 and later joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969. At ISRO, he played a crucial role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle, the SLV-III. His return to DRDO in 1982 marked the beginning of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, earning him the esteemed title of “Missile Man of India.” His leadership during India’s 1998 nuclear tests brought him national acclaim and solidified his status as a key figure in India’s scientific and technological advancements.
Throughout his tenure as President, Dr. Kalam was not only a figurehead but an active advocate for education and progress. His books, such as “Wings of Fire” and “Ignited Minds,” have motivated millions to aspire for greatness and contribute to the nation’s development. These works reflect his belief in the power of dreams and the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success.
On July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, Dr. Kalam tragically passed away due to a cardiac arrest. Despite his physical absence, his spirit and teachings remain a beacon of inspiration. His profound quotes, such as “Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success,” and “Let us sacrifice today so that our children can have a better tomorrow,” continue to resonate with people of all ages.
Dr. Kalam’s wisdom extended beyond technical fields; he emphasized the role of educators, parents, and leaders in shaping a better society. His belief in the potential of young minds and his call for a corruption-free nation underscore his enduring impact on Indian society.
