According to Argentine authorities on Wednesday, Liam Payne, 31, was discovered dead after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room at a hotel in Buenos Aires. In a statement, police claimed they were alerted to a “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol” and were dispatched to the CasaSur hotel in the capital’s green Palermo neighborhood. According to the statement, the police discovered a man who had fallen from his room’s balcony after the hotel manager reported hearing a loud noise coming from the inner courtyard.
A worker can be heard requesting police assistance in case-related audio that was acquired from the security ministry of Buenos Aires. There was a balcony in the apartment, which put the guest’s life in danger. “When he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone,” the worker stated. Following their “indefinite hiatus” in 2016, Payne, along with his bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, pursued a solo career after soaring to international stardom as a member of one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. “Teardrop” was Payne’s most recent song, which was made available in March of this year.
Although a lot of the specifics of his death are still unknown, Payne has previously discussed his battles with mental illness and his use of alcohol as a coping mechanism for the demands of celebrity. Fans and celebrities in the music business, including those in the audience outside the hotel, expressed their sorrow over his passing. Violeta Antier said that she had arrived immediately upon learning of Payne’s passing.
“I saw him two weeks ago at a Niall (Horan) concert, another One Direction member. He was there, I saw him,” she said. “He was ok.” Payne attended an Oct. 2 concert by Horan in Buenos Aires. The two had posted videos together and with fans.
Among those expressing their sorrow was American singer Charlie Puth.
“At the moment, I am in shock. I was always treated so kindly by Liam,” he wrote on Instagram. “I got to collaborate with him as one of the first well-known artists. It’s unbelievable that he’s gone. When Payne, then 16 years old, tried out for the British version of X Factor a second time in 2010, music mogul Simon Cowell placed him in a group with his future bandmates. In a 2012 interview, Cowell told Rolling Stone that he had “always backed” Payne during his 2008 first audition, but that he had failed because he was too young.
Earlier on Wednesday, Payne had appeared to post on Snapchat about his trip in Argentina, talking about riding horses, playing polo, and looking forward to returning home to see his dog. “It’s a lovely day here in Argentina,” he said in the video.
