Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is steadily recovering from a spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official update.

Iyer suffered a laceration to his spleen after a blow to his left rib cage while fielding, which led to internal bleeding and required immediate hospitalization. According to the BCCI medical team, the 29-year-old batter is now in a stable condition and responding well to treatment under the supervision of specialists in Sydney.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding. Scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under medical care, stable, and recovering well,” the BCCI statement read.

Officials confirmed that a team doctor remains stationed in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s progress and coordinate with local specialists and Indian medical experts. Sources said he will continue treatment in Sydney until cleared for travel back to India.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah noted that while the injury is serious, Iyer’s recovery is proceeding “positively.” He added that the medical team is optimistic about his return within a few weeks if healing continues as expected. “The focus right now is on complete recovery. We will not rush him back into action,” Shah emphasized.

The timeline for Iyer’s comeback remains flexible, depending on his rehabilitation pace and follow-up test results. His absence is a setback for India ahead of upcoming series, but team management remains confident that he will regain full fitness before major assignments later this season.

The BCCI said it will provide further updates as Iyer progresses, urging fans to remain patient as the cricketer focuses on recovery.
