Assam turned into a sea of emotion on Friday as Roi Roi Binale, the final film of late singer-actor Zubeen Garg, premiered across the state. The release became a moment of collective remembrance, uniting thousands of fans who gathered at cinemas from the early hours to pay tribute to the man who defined modern Assamese music and cinema.
Several theatres in Guwahati and other towns opened as early as 4:30 a.m. to meet the overwhelming demand, with fans queuing in the rain to secure seats. Many cinemas cancelled other screenings to dedicate their halls exclusively to Roi Roi Binale, turning its release into a state-wide celebration of Zubeen’s artistic legacy.
Inside packed auditoriums, emotions ran high as audiences watched the star’s final performance. Viewers were seen singing along to his songs, clapping, and shedding tears, describing the film as “one last meeting with Zubeen.” The mood was both festive and mournful — a blend of pride and sorrow that reflected Assam’s deep connection with its cultural icon.
Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, Roi Roi Binale is a musical romantic drama in which Zubeen plays a visually impaired artist. The project had been one of his long-cherished dreams, developed over nearly two decades. The film’s release on October 31 marked not only a cinematic event but also a symbolic farewell to a man whose music transcended generations.
The film opened to sold-out shows across Assam, with nearly 600 screenings scheduled statewide next week. The release extended beyond regional borders, premiering in several Indian cities including Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Dehradun — a rare achievement for an Assamese-language film.
Fans and filmmakers alike called the event a “historic moment” for Assamese cinema. “Zubeen has given everything to this industry — his music, his soul. This film is our way of saying thank you,” said a theatre manager in Guwahati.
For millions across Assam, Roi Roi Binale is more than a movie — it is a parting song. As Zubeen Garg’s melodies echoed through theatres, they carried the promise that his voice, passion, and spirit would continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
