French prosecutors have carried out a search of the Paris office of social media platform X as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into alleged online offences, marking a significant escalation in scrutiny of the company owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

The operation was conducted by the Paris public prosecutor’s cybercrime unit, which is examining whether the platform complied with French law in relation to the handling and moderation of online content. Investigators are looking into suspected offences linked to the operation of the service, including how certain types of illegal or harmful material may have circulated on the platform.

According to officials, the search aimed to gather documents and digital evidence that could shed light on X’s internal processes, including its content moderation practices and technical systems. Prosecutors said the investigation focuses on whether automated systems or platform policies may have contributed to the spread of content that is prohibited under French law.

The probe was opened following complaints and reports that raised concerns about how the platform functions in France. Authorities are examining potential breaches related to online crimes, which may include the dissemination of unlawful material and failures to adequately prevent or remove such content.

X, formerly known as Twitter, has been under increasing pressure from regulators in Europe since Musk acquired the company. French authorities have repeatedly stressed that digital platforms operating in the country must respect national laws, regardless of where they are headquartered.

At this stage, no charges have been announced, and the search does not imply guilt. Prosecutors said the investigation remains ongoing and that further steps will depend on the evidence collected during the operation.
