Jamaat Chief Shafiqur Rahman Denies Majority–Minority Divide Amid Minority Safety Concerns in Bangladesh

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee /11th February 2026

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman has rejected the idea of a majority–minority divide in the country, asserting that all citizens should be viewed through a shared national identity rather than religious labels. His remarks come at a time of heightened concern over the safety and rights of Hindu and other minority communities as Bangladesh prepares for a crucial national election.

Speaking on the issue, Rahman said the use of majority and minority terminology only deepens divisions within society. He argued that Jamaat-e-Islami believes in recognising everyone as “Bangladeshi” first, stressing that equal dignity, security and rights must be ensured for all citizens regardless of religious background. According to him, social harmony can only be achieved by moving away from classifications that separate people along faith lines.

The Jamaat leader sought to reassure minority communities by stating that his party stands for protection and respect for all groups. He maintained that fear and insecurity should have no place in the country and claimed that Jamaat would work to uphold justice and fairness if given political responsibility. Rahman also said that those coming from outside the country should be treated as guests, reflecting a broader message of tolerance and hospitality.

However, his comments come amid ongoing reports of anxiety among minority populations, particularly Hindus, who have expressed concerns over sporadic incidents of intimidation and violence. These fears have been amplified by the volatile political climate following major changes in Bangladesh’s leadership and the approaching elections, which are being closely watched both domestically and internationally. Rahman avoided giving direct answers on politically sensitive issues, including questions related to the future of deposed leaders, choosing instead to focus on themes of unity and national identity. Observers note that Jamaat-e-Islami appears to be attempting to project a more inclusive image as it seeks greater political relevance in the evolving landscape.
