While the US and South Korea performed military exercises, North Korea shot a projectile toward the sea on Saturday, according to South Korea and Japan. Tokyo suggested it might have been a ballistic missile.
The South Korean military told reporters in a brief statement that the projectile was shot toward the sea off the east coast of North Korea. It provided no more information. The rocket seemed to have fallen into the water, according to Japan’s coast guard.
According to Japan’s national broadcaster NHK, which cited defense ministry officials, it seems to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The significant exercises, which Seoul and Washington claim are solely defensive, were initiated five days prior with the goal of evaluating preparedness against North Korean military threats. North Korea, which has nuclear weapons, regularly expresses its indignation and disapproval of these drills, claiming that they are “dress rehearsals” for the allies’ planned use of force against it.
The prime minister of South Korea met with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday to discuss methods to resume talks with the North, which have been halted since 2019.
