US Judge Halts Trump’s Proposed Triumphal Arch Construction in Washington

A US federal judge has temporarily halted construction of President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch in Washington, DC, dealing a legal setback to the administration’s plans for the monument ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations. US District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a temporary restraining order on November 6, directing the administration to suspend construction for 14 days. The decision followed legal challenges questioning whether the federal government had obtained the necessary congressional authorisation to build the structure.

The proposed monument, measuring approximately 250 feet (76 metres), is planned for Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. Trump has presented the project as a tribute to American veterans and a symbol of national pride.

The judicial intervention came shortly after the National Capital Planning Commission approved the proposal in an 8-4 vote following a nine-hour public hearing. The project has faced opposition from residents, veterans, lawmakers and historic preservation advocates concerned about its impact on the historic landscape.

The governments of Washington, DC, and Virginia challenged the construction, arguing that the administration lacked congressional approval for the project. They also raised concerns about potential traffic disruptions, logistical complications and financial consequences.

A separate legal challenge involving Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian questioned the monument’s compatibility with the historical significance of the surrounding area. Opponents have also warned that the structure could obstruct important views connecting Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial.

The Trump administration has defended the proposal, citing its commemorative purpose and national significance. The design is reportedly inspired by prominent triumphal monuments, including Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. Trump first announced the proposal in 2025 as part of preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. The temporary court order puts the construction plans on hold while the legal challenges continue.
