Ophthalmologist Warns Against Firecracker-Related Eye Injuries, Shares First-Aid Tips During Diwali
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee / 6th November 2026
As people prepare to celebrate Diwali 2026, an ophthalmologist has warned about the risk of firecracker-related eye injuries and highlighted the importance of taking precautions during the festival. Exposure to fireworks, flying sparks, smoke and chemical substances can cause serious damage to the eyes, with some injuries potentially resulting in permanent vision loss if medical attention is delayed.
According to the report, eye emergencies during Diwali commonly occur when firecracker debris, ash or sparks come into contact with the eyes. Such incidents can lead to irritation, corneal scratches, burns and, in severe cases, penetrating injuries. Children are particularly vulnerable because they may handle fireworks without understanding the associated risks.
The ophthalmologist has advised people to remain cautious while lighting firecrackers and maintain a safe distance from burning fireworks. Wearing protective eyewear can also reduce the possibility of particles and sparks entering the eyes. Parents should ensure that children are supervised throughout firecracker-related activities.
The doctor has also shared important first-aid tips for eye injuries. If dust, ash or chemical substances enter the eyes, people should avoid rubbing them, as this could worsen the injury. In cases involving chemical exposure, the affected eye should be gently rinsed with clean running water. Medical assistance should be sought promptly, particularly if irritation or discomfort continues.
Several common mistakes can aggravate eye injuries during festive celebrations. Applying household substances such as milk, honey or rose water to an injured eye should be avoided. People should also refrain from using unprescribed eye drops or attempting to remove objects embedded in the eye. Pressing or rubbing the affected area can cause further damage. The ophthalmologist has stressed that symptoms such as blurred vision, severe eye pain, bleeding, swelling and sensitivity to light should never be ignored. Anyone experiencing these warning signs after a firecracker accident should seek immediate medical attention.
With Diwali celebrations often involving fireworks and crowded gatherings, awareness about eye safety remains essential. Following basic precautions, avoiding unsafe firecracker practices and seeking timely treatment can help prevent serious complications and protect vision during the festive season.
