Time to head back to Hogwarts. The teaser for the next series based on the wildly successful Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling was released by HBO. The first season, which is based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, offers a fresh perspective on the start of Harry’s journey at Hogwarts and introduces a new cast as they inhabit the magical wizarding world. A young Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) stays with the Dursleys at the start of the teaser. Before the letter that transformed his life arrives, a montage depicts Harry being teased by Aunt Petunia and harassed by his cousin Dudley.

In the role of Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid, Nick Frost takes Harry to the school of wizardry, where he meets his two lifelong friends, Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton), in addition to his teachers and headmaster, Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow). The show’s teaser has elicited a range of sentiments from admiration for some casting decisions to excitement at the authenticity and respect for the original content.

One comment noted, “Harry being bullied by Dudley at school when he ends up on the roof. Like this is for the book fans.” Many others also pointed out that the expanded runtime gives makers a greater opportunity to bring things from Rowling’s books to the screen. “They showed A LOT more than I was expecting. The sets look INSANE,” read one comment.

However, not everyone was entirely happy. One quipped, “It’s like reading the book in a different font.” Another chimed in, “I’ve never had so many mixed feelings from a trailer before.” A lot of criticism and jibes were aimed at Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Potions master Severus Snape. The show changes the character’s ethnicity to black, and the actor has admitted to receiving racist attacks for his involvement in the show.

One fan summed up the sentiment when they wrote, “Anybody else feel like they just stepped into a surreal alternate reality? Like all the details are there, and it looks good. But my brain isn’t comprehending.”

The show is set to release on HBO Max on Christmas 2026.

The first eight films based on the Harry Potter books were released between 2001 and 2011. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson’s careers were also launched by the popular movies, which starred Daniel Radcliffe in the title role.  The goal of the new remake is to cover more material from the original book series than the movies did and to be more book-accurate. The show has a star-studded cast and is presently being produced at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK. Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall.
