The Indian National Congress has announced a comprehensive list of 284 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, marking a decisive step in its campaign strategy as it seeks to re-establish its political footprint in the state.
The candidate list, cleared by the party’s central leadership after multiple rounds of consultations, covers a vast majority of the 294 Assembly constituencies. By declaring nominees for nearly all seats in one go, the Congress aims to give its candidates sufficient time to mobilise support, strengthen grassroots networks, and intensify campaigning ahead of the polls.
Among the names in the list is senior leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has been fielded from Baharampur, a constituency he has represented in the past. Another prominent inclusion is Mausam Benazir Noor, a former Member of Parliament, who will contest from Malatipur in Malda district. The party has also nominated several experienced leaders in key constituencies such as Asansol, Darjeeling, Dum Dum, and Diamond Harbour, indicating its intent to remain competitive across regions.
The selection reflects a blend of seasoned politicians and fresh faces, suggesting an effort to balance experience with new energy. The Congress has also focused on social representation, allocating a significant number of tickets to candidates from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, minority communities, and women. This approach is aimed at broadening its voter base and strengthening its connect with diverse sections of society.
Notably, the party is contesting the elections independently, a departure from its earlier alliance with Left parties in the state. This shift underscores a strategic recalibration as the Congress looks to rebuild its organisational strength and reclaim political space in a state where it has faced electoral setbacks in recent years. The candidate selection process reportedly saw strong interest, with a large number of aspirants applying for tickets. The final list was drawn up after extensive discussions within the party’s Central Election Committee, which evaluated factors such as local influence, winnability, and organisational contribution.
With polling expected to take place in multiple phases and counting scheduled shortly after, the early announcement is expected to give Congress a head start in campaign preparations. Party leaders believe that a well-prepared cadre and strong local outreach will be crucial in a highly competitive, multi-cornered contest. The announcement has set the stage for an intense electoral battle in West Bengal, with major political players gearing up for a high-stakes contest that will shape the state’s political landscape in the years to come.
