Indian health authorities have stepped up airport surveillance and quarantine measures after two suspected Ebola cases were reported in Ahmedabad and Bengaluru, prompting nationwide precautionary action to prevent any possible outbreak.
According to officials, one suspected case involved a businessman from the Republic of Congo who arrived in Ahmedabad, while another involved a 28-year-old woman from Uganda who landed in Bengaluru. Both individuals were immediately isolated after showing symptoms associated with viral infections, including fatigue and body aches.
The Union Health Ministry has instructed airports and state health departments to strengthen monitoring of international passengers arriving from Ebola-affected African nations such as Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. Enhanced screening measures, including thermal checks, self-declaration forms, and rapid isolation procedures, have been introduced at several international airports.
In Bengaluru, airport health authorities identified the Ugandan woman during routine screening and shifted her to the state-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital for observation. Samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for testing. Officials later confirmed that the woman had tested negative for Ebola, easing concerns in Karnataka.
Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad, the businessman from Congo was quarantined as a precautionary measure. Health officials also isolated three individuals who had come into close contact with him while laboratory tests were being conducted. Authorities stated that the patient remained under observation and that all necessary safety protocols were being followed.
Health experts have emphasized that no confirmed Ebola case has been detected in India so far. However, authorities are maintaining strict vigilance due to the highly infectious nature of the disease and recent outbreaks reported in parts of Africa.
Airports in major cities, including Mumbai and Ahmedabad, have increased preparedness by activating isolation facilities and strengthening coordination with local hospitals. Officials have urged the public not to panic, stressing that the measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring rapid response in case of any confirmed infection. The government continues to monitor the situation closely while reinforcing public health infrastructure and emergency response systems across the count.
