China Pushes AI and Smart Manufacturing Cooperation at BRICS Summit

China has proposed a broad framework for artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing and digital cooperation among BRICS countries, with President Xi Jinping calling for deeper technological collaboration across the grouping. The proposals were outlined as Beijing sought to strengthen cooperation among developing economies and expand the role of technology in driving economic growth.

Xi proposed the creation of a BRICS artificial intelligence open-source community to promote wider access to AI technologies and encourage cooperation among member countries. The initiative is aimed at developing a more open AI ecosystem and enabling countries to share technological resources, knowledge and expertise rather than allowing advanced technologies to remain concentrated in a few major economies.

The Chinese president also called for greater cooperation in the digital economy through the development of a digital ecosystem cloud platform for BRICS nations. Such a platform could help member countries strengthen digital infrastructure and facilitate greater collaboration in areas including technology, data and digital services.

Another major component of the proposal was cooperation in intelligent manufacturing. China has offered to work with other BRICS members on developing smart factories and promoting the use of advanced technologies in manufacturing. The initiative would also focus on developing common standards and strengthening industrial cooperation, areas that Beijing sees as important for modernising production and improving efficiency.

Xi further proposed a science and technology talent-development initiative, including an engineer cultivation alliance. The plan is intended to support the development of skilled professionals capable of working with emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing systems. China has increasingly placed technological education and workforce development at the centre of its efforts to expand cooperation with countries in the Global South.

The Chinese president also suggested establishing a BRICS special economic zone partnership to encourage trade and investment among member countries. The proposal comes amid efforts within BRICS to increase economic exchanges and create new opportunities for businesses from developing economies.

Xi linked the technology proposals to a broader call for stronger solidarity among Global South countries. He urged BRICS members to defend sovereign equality, uphold international law and promote a more representative global governance system.

The proposals reflect China’s growing emphasis on artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing as key drivers of future economic development. Beijing has been seeking to expand international cooperation in these sectors while presenting China as a major partner for developing countries seeking access to emerging technologies.
