Veteran Congress leader, educationist and former Governor Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, popularly known as D. Y. Patil, has passed away at the age of 92. His death marks the end of a long public life spanning politics, education, healthcare and social service.
Patil was a prominent political figure from Maharashtra who rose through the Congress ranks before taking up gubernatorial responsibilities in several States. He served as Governor of Tripura and Bihar and also held additional charge as Governor of West Bengal for a brief period in 2014. His political career was closely associated with Maharashtra’s Congress organisation and the State’s public life.
Beyond electoral politics, Patil established a significant presence in the field of education. He was among the early political leaders to recognise the importance of expanding access to professional education and went on to build a large educational network. His efforts eventually developed into the D. Y. Patil group of institutions, with colleges and universities offering courses across a range of disciplines.
His entry into education began with the establishment of the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai in 1983. Over the years, the educational network expanded substantially, with institutions in engineering, medicine, management, agriculture and other fields. The D. Y. Patil group has described his vision as providing young people with greater opportunities for higher education.
Patil was also associated with healthcare and philanthropy. His initiatives included the establishment of healthcare facilities aimed at making medical services accessible to people from different sections of society. The D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre in Navi Mumbai, founded in 2004, became one of the major institutions associated with his social-service efforts.
His public career brought him recognition at the national level. Patil was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991 for his contribution to social service. His work across politics, education and public welfare helped establish his reputation beyond Maharashtra. As Governor, Patil served in constitutional positions at a time when the political landscape in several States was undergoing change. He became Governor of Tripura in 2009 and later took charge as Governor of Bihar in 2013. In July 2014, he briefly discharged the additional responsibilities of the West Bengal Governor after the tenure of M. K. Narayanan ended.
