Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on November 5, saying he would step away from the national team after the November international break.
Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, said he would hand back Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt. His departure marks the end of an era for the national side, which he captained to several major international honours.
During his international career, Ronaldo made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored a record 146 goals, making him the highest-scoring men’s international footballer. He also led the country to its first major international trophy at Euro 2016, followed by victories in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
The forward represented Portugal at six FIFA World Cup tournaments, including the 2026 edition. He scored three goals during the latest tournament, taking his overall World Cup tally to 11. His longevity and consistency made him one of the most influential figures in international football.
Ronaldo’s last appearance for Portugal came in September, when the team secured a 1-0 victory over Wales in the Nations League. His retirement announcement followed a period of uncertainty surrounding his role in the national squad. The Portuguese Football Federation expressed gratitude for his contribution and indicated that his achievements would be honoured.
Although his international career is ending, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing club football for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. He is also pursuing the milestone of scoring 1,000 career goals, with his tally reportedly standing at 985 when he announced his decision. Ronaldo’s retirement closes a historic chapter in Portuguese football, leaving behind records and achievements that will be difficult for future generations to match.
