Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has called on the national selectors to provide more opportunities to Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the ODI format, saying their talent deserves greater recognition in India’s 50-over setup.
Yuvraj, who has mentored Abhishek for several years, expressed his desire to see the young left-handed opener become a regular part of the Indian ODI team. He also highlighted the potential of Kishan and Sooryavanshi, arguing that all three players have the ability to contribute significantly to Indian cricket.
Abhishek has attracted attention through his aggressive batting in T20 internationals. His recent performances include a remarkable 35-ball century against New Zealand in Wellington, helping India establish an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Meanwhile, Abhishek and Sooryavanshi recently created a T20I record by putting together an unbeaten 118-run partnership during the powerplay against New Zealand. The performance further highlighted their attacking approach and ability to dominate opposition bowling. Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also emerged as one of India’s promising young batting prospects. Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, brings considerable experience, having already represented India in 32 ODIs.
Yuvraj acknowledged that competition for places in the Indian team remains intense, particularly with established players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill occupying important positions in the batting order. However, he believes younger players should receive opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in the longer limited-overs format.
India are scheduled to begin a five-match ODI series against New Zealand on November 4, following the conclusion of the T20I series. The upcoming matches could renew discussions about selection choices and opportunities for emerging Indian batters.
