Tarun Tejpal Sentenced to 10 Years in 2013 Rape Case, Ordered to Surrender Within Two Weeks

Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court in the 2013 rape case involving a former junior colleague. The sentence was pronounced after the court recently overturned his acquittal by a Goa sessions court, bringing a significant development in a case that has remained in the public spotlight for more than a decade.

The High Court directed Tejpal to surrender before the authorities within two weeks to begin serving his sentence. The punishment followed a detailed hearing on the quantum of sentence after the court held him guilty of rape, reversing the trial court’s 2021 verdict that had acquitted him of all charges.

The case stems from an incident during the THiNK Fest organised by Tehelka in Goa in November 2013. The complainant, then a junior colleague at the news magazine, alleged that Tejpal sexually assaulted and raped her inside an elevator at the hotel hosting the event. The allegations triggered widespread public outrage and led to a criminal investigation by the Goa Police.

In May 2021, a sessions court in Goa acquitted Tejpal, citing inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case and raising concerns over the quality of the investigation. The verdict was challenged by the Goa government, which argued that the trial court had failed to properly assess the evidence and the testimony of the survivor. The appeal eventually reached the Bombay High Court. The High Court, after re-examining the evidence and the findings of the lower court, concluded that the acquittal could not be sustained. It convicted Tejpal of rape and scheduled a separate hearing to determine the appropriate sentence.

During the sentencing proceedings, the prosecution sought a stringent punishment, contending that the offence involved a serious breach of trust and authority. The defence, on the other hand, appealed for leniency, citing Tejpal’s age, health, and personal circumstances while urging the court to impose a reduced sentence.

The ruling marks a major milestone in one of India’s most closely followed sexual assault cases and underscores the judiciary’s continued scrutiny of high-profile offences involving allegations of sexual violence. The judgment brings the prolonged legal battle closer to its conclusion, though further legal remedies remain available to the convicted former journalist.
