Centre Denies Clearance for Revanth Reddy’s US Visit Amid Telangana’s Global Education Push

The Centre has denied permission for Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to travel to the United States as part of his ongoing foreign tour, forcing him to curtail a planned visit aimed at strengthening Telangana’s ties with leading global educational institutions.
Reddy and his delegation had travelled to the United Kingdom and were scheduled to proceed to the US for a series of meetings and institutional engagements. While the Centre cleared the UK leg of the tour, approval for the US visit was not granted by the Ministry of External Affairs. The development came after the delegation had already reached London.
The Chief Minister was expected to visit several prominent American institutions, including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and Virginia Tech. The proposed engagements were focused largely on education, skill development, research and opportunities for collaboration between Telangana institutions and international universities.
Following the denial of permission, Reddy is expected to return to Hyderabad from London on August 23 instead of travelling to the United States. The decision has altered the itinerary of the delegation but has not completely halted its efforts to pursue the proposed collaborations.
Reddy has reportedly expressed disappointment over the Centre’s decision and questioned the need to restrict initiatives involving education and youth development. He maintained that programmes intended to create opportunities for students and strengthen academic partnerships should not be affected by political considerations.
Despite the cancellation of the US leg, the Chief Minister has asked members of his delegation to continue engaging with American institutions. Officials have been directed to pursue discussions and work towards finalising proposed memoranda of understanding and other forms of institutional cooperation. The move is aimed at ensuring that the groundwork already undertaken during the planning of the visit does not go to waste.
The UK portion of Reddy’s overseas tour is expected to continue as scheduled. His programme includes interactions with leading institutions such as Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the London School of Economics and London Business School.
The Telangana government has been seeking to expand international partnerships as part of its broader effort to strengthen Hyderabad’s position as a global centre for education, technology, research and innovation. The proposed US engagements were viewed as an opportunity to attract academic collaborations, develop skill-oriented programmes and create greater exposure for students and professionals from the State. The Telangana government is expected to continue pursuing international academic and institutional partnerships through official channels, even as Reddy returns without completing the US leg of his tour.
The episode comes amid continued efforts by the State government to project Hyderabad as a competitive global knowledge hub and deepen its engagement with leading universities and institutions abroad.
