President Xi Jinping of China will be welcomed by Donald Trump to the US for discussions on tariffs, artificial intelligence, and rare earths.

Next week, President Xi Jinping will make his first state visit to Washington in almost ten years. He will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House for high-stakes discussions and some schmoozing.

Senior administration sources informed reporters that Trump will be present to greet Xi for the state visit when his flight arrives at Joint Base Andrews, which is located just outside of Washington, on Wednesday. Trump usually meets foreign leaders at the White House, so that is uncommon. At an inside arrival ceremony on the State Floor of the White House on Thursday, Trump and first lady Melania Trump greet Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan, marking the centerpiece of the visit.

Before withdrawing behind closed doors for their meetings, Trump and Xi will also take part in a troop review in the Rose Garden. While their spouses get to work, the first lady and Peng Liyuan will have their own engagement. The officials briefed media on Xi’s visit on Friday, but no specifics were disclosed. When Trump and the first lady welcome the Chinese delegation for a state dinner in the East Room on Thursday, Xi and his spouse will also be honored guests. Everyone wants to attend the dinner, according to Trump. Remarks will be given by both leaders.

“Thousands of people would love to be at that dinner,” Trump told reporters Friday in the Oval Office. “I’ve told a lot of very good friends of mine, you just can’t come,'” Trump said. However, some of the Republican president’s buddies from the tech sector have been invited.

According to the White House, Jeff Bezos, the creator of Amazon, Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell Technologies, are among the executives expected to attend the state dinner.

Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Jane Fraser, CEO of Citigroup, and Tim Cook, who recently resigned as CEO of Apple, are all on the guest list. As the country commemorates its 250th anniversary, Xi and Peng Liyuan are expected to return to the White House next Friday for a private tea with the Trumps, who will subsequently give them a tour of the National Archives.

US officials indicated that Washington and Beijing might ease tariffs on certain nonstrategic goods, benefiting both parties. However, they clarified that the US is not likely to reduce export controls on rare earth minerals, which are crucial for various products, despite discussions on maintaining their flow from China.

During the weekend, Treasury Secretary Bessent will meet in New York with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to discuss economic issues, including artificial intelligence. He will lead a Chinese delegation to the US for trade consultations, focusing on China’s rare earth mineral stockpiles, crucial for various technologies. These discussions stem from ongoing trade tensions influenced by past tariffs and sanctions. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will also participate in the meeting.
