US-based coffee chain Starbucks is planning to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai, marking an expansion of its corporate and technology operations in India. The centre is expected to create around 800 jobs during its first phase, adding to Chennai’s growing presence as a destination for multinational companies setting up specialised global operations.

The proposed facility will support Starbucks’ international business functions and is expected to bring together professionals working across areas such as technology, business operations and other corporate services. The move reflects the increasing role of India in supporting global companies through specialised talent and technology-driven capabilities.

Chennai has emerged as an important hub for Global Capability Centres in recent years, attracting companies from a wide range of industries. The city has a large pool of skilled professionals, established technology infrastructure and a strong presence of engineering and management talent. These factors have helped companies expand their operations beyond traditional outsourcing and establish centres handling more strategic responsibilities.

Starbucks’ proposed centre is expected to contribute to this growing ecosystem. The initial hiring of about 800 employees could cover a range of specialised roles as the company develops its operations in the city. The centre could also expand its workforce and functions over time, depending on business requirements.

India has become an increasingly important location for multinational companies seeking access to skilled professionals while developing global technology and business capabilities. GCCs in the country are increasingly moving beyond back-office functions to work on areas including digital technology, analytics, finance, product development and research.

The Starbucks investment adds another major international brand to Chennai’s expanding GCC landscape. The establishment of the centre is expected to strengthen the city’s position as a key destination for global companies and create new opportunities for professionals in technology and corporate services. It also highlights the continuing expansion of multinational operations in India.
