Veteran Malayalam Actress Savithri Sreedharan Dies at 85

Veteran Malayalam theatre and film actress Savithri Sreedharan died at the age of 85 at her residence in Kozhikode on Wednesday. The actress had reportedly been suffering from age-related health problems. Sreedharan was widely associated with Malayalam theatre and cinema and had a career spanning several decades. She began her journey in theatre, where she established herself through numerous performances before making her transition to the big screen.

Her career in theatre lasted for nearly four decades, during which she worked with several prominent theatre groups and became known for her performances in Malayalam stage productions. Her experience on stage later became an important part of her work in films.

Sreedharan made her film debut with Kadavu, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Although her film appearances were relatively limited compared with her extensive theatre career, she earned recognition for the depth and natural quality of her performances. She returned to Malayalam cinema prominently with the 2018 film Sudani from Nigeria, directed by Zakariya Mohammed. Her performance in the film received widespread appreciation and introduced her work to a larger audience.

Her portrayal in Sudani from Nigeria earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress. She was also among the recipients of a Special Mention at the National Film Awards for her performance. The film, which centred on a football club manager and two Nigerian players in Kerala, was praised for its treatment of human relationships and its blend of humour and emotion. Sreedharan’s performance was an important part of the film’s emotional narrative.

Despite entering the film industry at a relatively later stage of her career, Sreedharan demonstrated the impact that experienced theatre performers could bring to cinema. Her ability to portray ordinary characters with restraint and authenticity earned her appreciation from audiences and critics.
