BJP Announces New State In-Charges; Smriti Irani Gets Haryana and Chhattisgarh

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced a fresh set of state in-charges and co-in-charges for several states and Union Territories as part of an organisational reshuffle. The appointments include several senior leaders and come as the party continues to reorganise its state-level structure.

Former Union minister Smriti Irani has been appointed as the BJP’s in-charge for both Haryana and Chhattisgarh. Irani, who recently returned to the party’s central organisation as a national general secretary, will now oversee organisational affairs in the two states. Her appointment adds to her responsibilities within the BJP’s national structure.

Senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde has been assigned responsibility for Uttar Pradesh. Tawde is already serving as a national general secretary of the party and has been involved in organisational activities in the state. His new assignment comes at a time when Uttar Pradesh is preparing for its next Assembly election.

The party has also appointed Satish Poonia as its in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir. Poonia, who is a national general secretary of the BJP, has previously held important organisational responsibilities within the party. Tarun Chugh has been given charge of Gujarat, while Harish Dwivedi has been appointed the BJP’s in-charge for Bihar. The appointments are part of a broader organisational exercise covering multiple states and Union Territories. State in-charges play an important role in coordinating the party’s organisational activities, maintaining communication between the central leadership and state units, and overseeing party programmes.

The Uttar Pradesh assignment for Tawde is particularly significant because the state is scheduled to hold Assembly elections in 2027. The BJP has already begun organisational preparations in the state, with senior leaders holding meetings with party functionaries and reviewing the organisation at different levels. Tawde has participated in recent discussions involving the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit.

The party had earlier announced changes to its national organisation under BJP president Nitin Nabin. Smriti Irani was appointed a national general secretary, while Tawde was also retained in the national general secretary role. The wider restructuring included appointments to several national positions and changes across the party’s organisational departments.

The latest appointments expand the responsibilities of several senior leaders and are expected to strengthen coordination between the BJP’s central leadership and its state organisations. The new in-charges will oversee party activities in their respective states and work with local leadership on organisational matters. With Assembly elections approaching in states such as Uttar Pradesh, the reshuffle comes at an important stage for the BJP’s state-level organisation.
