Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Attack on Kolkata Residence, Claims Seventh Attempt on His Life

Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that his residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area was attacked by people associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), intensifying the political confrontation between the two parties in West Bengal. Banerjee claimed that the incident marked the seventh attempt on his life in the past six months. The BJP, however, dismissed his allegations.

According to Banerjee, the incident took place around 2 am when a group of people allegedly targeted his residence using bricks and stones. He accused BJP supporters of being responsible for the attack and claimed that several TMC workers were injured during the confrontation. The MP alleged that the incident was part of a series of attempts to intimidate him and his party workers.

Sharing details of the incident, Banerjee said one of the injured TMC workers suffered a serious thumb injury that required plastic surgery. Another worker reportedly sustained a fracture below the eye. He questioned how such an incident could take place in the state capital and raised concerns over the security arrangements around his residence.

The TMC leader also referred to an earlier incident in which he had alleged that unidentified individuals were monitoring his office and residence. According to him, suspicious activities had continued for two days before the latest confrontation. He questioned whether those involved had any connection with law enforcement agencies and demanded accountability from the authorities.

The BJP rejected the allegations, with West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh dismissing Banerjee’s claims as political drama. Ghosh questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and challenged the TMC leader’s account of what had happened. The BJP maintained its opposition to the accusations levelled against its supporters. While Banerjee has demanded action over the alleged attack, the claims of an assassination attempt and the involvement of BJP supporters have not been independently established.
