A man from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, has alleged that he was assaulted during an INDIA bloc protest in Delhi’s Connaught Place, triggering a political controversy amid the Opposition’s campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) following the complaint, with the incident drawing reactions from political leaders.

The complainant, identified as Fahim Nazir, claimed that he was attacked by supporters of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after expressing support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioning the Opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities. According to Nazir, the confrontation took place on Thursday, October 8, when Opposition parties were holding a demonstration in the national capital.

Nazir alleged that he was beaten during the altercation and sustained injuries to his head and arm. He also complained of a severe headache following the incident. He subsequently approached the police, seeking action against those allegedly involved in the assault.

Following his complaint, Delhi Police registered an FIR against unidentified persons. The allegations have brought renewed attention to the confrontation at the protest site, although the claims against the individuals involved have not been independently established.

The incident has also prompted a political exchange between the BJP and the Congress. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised the alleged assault and shared a video of the confrontation on social media. The BJP has used the episode to question the conduct of Congress supporters during the Opposition’s demonstration. However, accounts of the confrontation remain disputed. Nazir accused individuals he described as Rahul Gandhi’s supporters of attacking him, while protesters alleged that he had verbally abused the Congress leader. The competing claims have added to the controversy surrounding the incident.

The confrontation occurred against the backdrop of growing tensions between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The INDIA bloc has been protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleging irregularities in the electoral process.

The Opposition has demanded accountability from the poll body, while the BJP has criticised its allegations against constitutional institutions. The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the confrontation and determine the responsibility of those involved. The incident has once again highlighted the political tensions surrounding the INDIA bloc protest in Delhi, as rival parties trade accusations over the episode.
