MIT Study Warns ChatGPT Use May Weaken Memory, Attention and Critical Thinking

An MIT Media Lab study has raised concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT on brain activity, memory and critical thinking, suggesting that excessive dependence on AI for writing could reduce independent cognitive engagement.

The study examined the brain activity of 54 students who completed essay-writing assignments under different conditions. Participants were divided into three groups: one used ChatGPT, another relied on a search engine, while the third completed the tasks without any digital assistance. Researchers monitored their brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG), which records electrical signals produced by the brain.

The findings indicated that students who relied on ChatGPT displayed the weakest neural connectivity among the three groups. Reduced connections were observed in networks associated with memory, attention and analytical thinking. These participants also struggled more to remember the content they had written and tended to produce less original, more generic essays.

Researchers described this phenomenon as cognitive debt, referring to the possibility that people may gradually lose opportunities to exercise essential thinking skills when AI performs much of the intellectual work for them. When users depend on AI to organise information, develop arguments and synthesise ideas, their own cognitive engagement may decline.

However, the experiment also highlighted a more productive way of using AI. Students who initially wrote their essays independently before turning to ChatGPT demonstrated stronger recall and more widespread brain activity than those who began with AI assistance and subsequently worked without it. The findings suggest that the order in which people use AI tools can influence their learning experience. Rather than replacing independent thought, artificial intelligence may be more effective when used to support ideas that users have already developed.
