Suvendu Adhikari, An Opponent Of Mamata Banerjee, Triumphs In Nandigram
Mamata Banerjee has suffered a setback after the BJP easily won a cooperative body poll in Nandigram, a previous stronghold of the Trinamool Congress where the Bengal Chief Minister was beaten in 2021.
The cooperative organization Bhekutia Samabay Krishi Samity, which was formerly led by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool, has seen the BJP win 11 of its 12 seats. In the election held on September 18, Trinamool won just one seat.
The Trinamool enjoyed a significant victory in another area of Nandigram last month. In Nandigram-2 Block, the Trinamool had won 51 seats, the CPM just one, and the BJP none. Additionally, Contai and Singur saw a landslide victory for Mamata Banerjee’s party.
In the voting on September 18, both parties accused one another of using violence. The Trinamool was charged by the BJP with attempting to bring in outsiders to obstruct polling. Suvendu Adhikari was accused of the same thing by the Trinamool.
A local panchayat Samiti member who claimed to be a Trinamool supporter was reportedly seen on television being abused by many ladies, who tore his shirt. The police came to his aid.
Suvendu Adhikari, a former adviser to Mamata Banerjee who defected to the BJP months prior to the Bengal election of 2021, represents the district of Nandigram.
Despite winning the state election and being elected chief minister for the third time, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, the area that helped her gain power in Bengal.
The defeat she suffered in the cooperative body elections in Nandigram has been interpreted by BJP officials as a sign that she is losing control of important Bengali strongholds.
Trinamool leaders, however, cited the victory of their party in the cooperative elections that were held in Nandigram in Hanubhunia, Gholpukur, and Birulia last month. The leaders claimed that the Trinamool is taking back territory that it lost in 2021 because the BJP was unable to win a single seat in them.
