IIT Kharagpur Assistant Professor Found Dead in Campus Residence; Exact Cause Awaited

Kharagpur: A tragic incident occurred at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur when the body of Assistant Professor Deepak Reddy Pullaguram (36) was found hanging in his official residence on campus. Professor Deepak an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.
Originally from Hyderabad, Professor Deepak lived in IIT Kharagpur’s campus quarters as part of his employment. On Wednesday morning, he could not be reached despite several attempts. Concerned officials at IIT Kharagpur informed the police after failing to make contact.
A team from the Hijli police outpost (under Kharagpur Town Police Station) responded in the afternoon. With assistance from security personnel, they entered the professor quarter and discovered his body hanging inside. He was immediately taken to B.C. Roy Hospital on the IIT campus, where doctors confirmed his death.
At this time, it is unclear if the death was a suicide or if other factors were involved. No official confirmation has been given about the presence or if underlying reasons; the police are investigating all angles. The police have sealed the room and are conducting a detailed investigation.
Authorities are questioning security staff, neighbors, and colleagues to understand the circumstances leading to the professor’s death. Investigators are also looking into any possible family or workplace issues that may have contributed.
The family of Professor Deepak, based in Hyderabad, has been informed. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
West Medinipur Superintendent of Police Papia Sultana said, “The body of a professor was found hanging. The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated.” The IIT administration has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
Police continue their investigation, and more details are expected after the post-mortem report is completed.
