Wildfires Ravage Spokane, Force 60,000 to Flee as Hundreds of Structures Burn

Fast-spreading wildfires in eastern Washington have destroyed at least 600 homes, businesses and other structures and forced nearly 60,000 people to evacuate from the Spokane area, authorities said, as firefighters continued to battle several uncontrolled blazes.

The fires around Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, burned roughly 21 square kilometres over the weekend. The destruction is part of a wider wildfire emergency across the western United States, where dozens of fires have placed heavy demands on federal, state and local firefighting agencies.

Across Washington state, approximately 1,000 square kilometres have already been scorched. Several fires, including those near Spokane, remained uncontained, raising concerns that the situation could worsen if dry weather persists in the coming days.
