Over a five-year period, Tamil Nadu will train 22,500 mechanics in EV maintenance

Tamil Nadu will roll out a skill development programme to train roadside two-wheeler and four-wheeler mechanics in servicing electric vehicles (EVs), as part of the 2026-27 Revised Budget. The move is aimed at preparing the traditional automobile workforce for the shift towards electric mobility.

The scheme, announced by the state government in the Revised Budget, seeks to reduce dependence on petroleum-based vehicles and curb environmental pollution by equipping mechanics with the skills required to repair and maintain EVs and their battery systems. An allocation of Rs 3 crore has been made for the scheme during the current financial year. Under the project, 22,500 workers will be taught over the next five years, including 12,500 mechanics already involved in servicing petrol and diesel automobiles.

According to Labour Department sources, the suggestion was started after a group of traditional two-wheeler and four-wheeler technicians asked Minister for Labour and Skill Development J Mohamed Farvas to offer specialised training in EV repair during a pre-budget meeting. The majority of roadside mechanics, according to officials, have a great deal of expertise fixing conventional cars, but they are not formally trained to handle electric vehicles, which include battery packs, electric motors, power electronics, and high-voltage systems. Many small workshops are unable to do EV maintenance and repair without these abilities.

Practical instruction on EV service, battery maintenance, fault diagnosis, safety procedures, and the use of contemporary diagnostic equipment will be included in the proposed course. The safe management of high-voltage electrical systems will receive particular attention.

To create and run the courses, the department is now choosing a qualified training partner.
