The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is set to withdraw the Indian men’s football team from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with the federation expected to prioritise a high-profile international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil. The move comes after a scheduling clash made it impractical for India to participate in both events with the senior national squad.
According to reports, the AIFF is in the final stages of confirming its withdrawal from the newly introduced FIFA ASEAN Cup, which is scheduled to take place during the same period as the India-Brazil fixture. FIFA regulations require participating nations to field their senior national teams in official competitions, preventing India from sending a reserve or Under-23 squad to the tournament while the first-choice team faces Brazil.
India had earlier accepted FIFA’s invitation to compete in the inaugural edition of the ASEAN Cup and was drawn in Division 1 Group A alongside regional rivals Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The tournament was expected to provide valuable competitive exposure against strong Asian opponents and mark India’s debut in the new FIFA-backed competition.
However, the opportunity to play Brazil is being viewed by the AIFF as a landmark moment for Indian football. A match against one of the most successful and recognised teams in world football is expected to offer Indian players rare international exposure while significantly boosting the sport’s popularity among domestic fans.
Officials believe the Brazil friendly will also attract widespread global attention, higher television viewership and increased commercial interest. The fixture is expected to generate enthusiasm among supporters and provide India’s players with the experience of competing against elite international talent.
The scheduling conflict has left the AIFF with limited options, as FIFA rules do not permit a national association to split its senior squad between two international competitions.
