As the social media behemoth unveiled a new open-weight model on Monday and promised more to come, CEO Mark Zuckerberg called for fewer U.S. barriers for open-source AI to better compete with Chinese competitors. In an attempt to meet consumer demand for AI systems that operate directly on people’s devices, the new model, Muse Glimmer, is smaller than top AI models from competitors and is made to do agentic activities on a Mac or PC with a single graphics card.
“We’ve got even bigger models that are coming soon,” Zuckerberg said in a video post accompanying his 14-page essay titled “The Future is for Everyone” in which he championed spreading AI rather than leaving it in the hands of a few. “The notion AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic.”
Zuckerberg’s remarks represent the most recent demonstration of support for open-weight AI, which is becoming more popular as companies become cautious about skyrocketing AI costs and become concerned about recent cybersecurity breaches involving models like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta.
Generally speaking, open-weight models are less expensive than top models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. In contrast to closed models, which businesses maintain complete control over, they also include publicly accessible fundamental components for simple customisation.
Because closed-source models had restrictions on cybersecurity use, Hugging Face, the AI coding collaborative that was attacked by a rogue OpenAI model, was compelled to utilise a Chinese open-weight model to protect against the attack, putting those limits under scrutiny.
With Moonshot’s Kimi K3, Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Max, and DeepSeek’s V4-Flash competing with the performance of leading U.S. systems, Chinese entrepreneurs are spearheading the competition for open-weight models. The top models from American companies OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet’s Google, on the other hand, are closed-weight. In premarket trading on Monday, Meta’s shares, which have down almost 10% so far this year, were up almost 3%.
