Twitch Faces Backlash After Amazon AI Training Opt-Out Policy Revealed

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 13th August 2026

Live-streaming platform Twitch has come under criticism after confirming that content created by streamers can be used to train Amazon’s generative artificial intelligence models unless users actively choose to opt out.

The Amazon-owned platform recently introduced a new privacy setting that allows creators to prevent their content from being used in future AI training. However, the feature is enabled by default, meaning streamers are automatically included unless they manually disable the setting. The move has sparked concerns among creators, many of whom argue that consent should have been obtained through an opt-in system rather than automatic enrollment.

Under the policy, a wide range of channel content—including live streams, archived videos, clips, chat messages, images and text posted on channels—may be used to train Amazon models designed to generate or synthesize text, audio, images and video. Streamers who opt out will have their future content excluded from such training programs.

The announcement triggered a wave of criticism across social media and Twitch communities. Several prominent creators urged fellow streamers to disable the setting, expressing concerns over the use of creator-generated content for commercial AI development. During a livestream explaining the change, Twitch officials acknowledged that the decision was unlikely to be well received by users.

Twitch executives said the new setting was intended to provide users with greater control over how their content is used. They also argued that publicly available online content is increasingly being utilized for AI training across the technology industry. Nevertheless, critics contend that placing the burden on users to opt out rather than seek permission first undermines transparency and creator rights.

The company clarified that disabling the AI-training option does not prevent Twitch or Amazon from using content for other purposes outlined in the platform’s privacy policies. Content may still be processed to support AI-powered features such as automated captions, content recommendations, sponsorship assistance tools and moderation systems designed to improve platform safety and user experience.
